Ten SE Lessons Learned Article.jpg

Where It All Began....

My article in NASA's ASK Magazine (July 2010) where I first started investigating "non-technical" workplace challenges after the launch of NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO).

My post-launch "lessons-learned" assessment revealed that the (top ten) biggest mission challenges were NOT the technical challenges inherent in building our cutting-edge spacecraft.  The biggest challenges were actually in the day-to-day activities of how our team worked together, communicated, and interacted together as a team.

The article was the beginning of my efforts at looking at workplace challenges and eventually led to the book "Nice Guys Finish Last and Other Workplace Challenges."

Challenger: A True Story of Heroism and Disaster on the Edge of Space

An excellent book on the Challenger disaster written by Adam Higginbotham.  It is a detailed and gripping account of the true roots of the Challenger disaster, which go all way back to the design of the space shuttle itself and tradeoffs that were made due to political and budgetary considerations.  He covers the the warning signs of the impending disaster and how they were ignored, as well as those who attempted to cover up why it occurred, and the investigation fueled by leakers and whistleblowers determined to bring the truth of the disaster to light.

A must read book for anyone interested in NASA and how things work behind the scenes- highly recommended.
